Treat Your Dog To A Thanksgiving Feast: Holiday Leftovers You Can and Can't Share With Your Dog

Thanksgiving is a time for friends, family and food. Since dogs are obviously a part of the family too, they deserve a delicious Thanksgiving feast just as much as the rest of us. However when it comes to sharing your Thanksgiving leftovers with your favorite four-legged family member, there are some rules on what your dog can and cannot have.

The Thanksgiving treats your dog can have include: turkey meat with the skin removed, plain sweet potatoes, carrots, plain pumpkin, and celery. All of these items are safe and healthy for your dog to have, and you won't have to worry about them causing your dog any digestive issues.

What you should definitely keep away from your dog's bowl is turkey bones, turkey skin, stuffing, raw bread, roll or biscuit dough, garlic mashed potatoes and onions.

Turkey bones can splinter and damage your dogs digestive system, and turkey skin is toxic to dogs. Eating turkey skin can cause digestive upset and possibly pancreatitis. Also keep your dog away from the stuffing in your bird if it has onions in it. Onions have an ingredient called thiosulphate which is also toxic to dogs.

If you make your Thanksgiving bread, rolls, and biscuits fresh, keep in eye on the raw dough before it's cooked as it's dangerous for dogs to eat. If a dog were to grab it off the counter, the yeast in the dough can expand in your dog's stomach and cause extreme pain.

Typically plain mashed potatoes are perfectly safe for your dog, but when you start adding extra ingredients into it, is when it starts to become unsafe for your dog. If your secret ingredient is a clove or two of fresh garlic, definitely keep the mashed potatoes away as garlic can lead to toxicity in dogs.

When giving your dog a Thanksgiving treat be sure to pay close attention to what is in it. It'll sure be a better Thanksgiving with the family gathered around the dinner table, instead of gathered in the vet's office.

Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving everyone!
